For the last 3 years, I have held on to something of a tradition when it comes to August. I stay in London for 4 days, usually with some kind of an agenda - but it is a time to sit quietly, think creatively, and plan for the rest of the year. Everyone is on holiday; freelance work tends to wind down at this time before picking back up, so it’s an opportunity. And I get to see friends I rarely see - there is an annual ‘cake date’ involved, too.
This year was always going to be slightly different.
Thanks to semi-serious illness my friend had to stay in bed - all the while in some kind of loosely held quarantine. The demand was to ‘tell me all’ by voice note on WhatsApp, with more catching up another time. Prior to my own time off for health reasons and various medical appointments and other things, I had a lot of research work to do - because we plan ahead when we freelance.
That should allow for curiosity, in a way. Side note: surely that is the most ‘feminist’ act anyone can commit? Anyway..
This month I spent time at the Science Gallery, as well as exploring other places - Word On Water, an astrology shop, various bars and novelty ice cream places. We are allowed awe - and I feel like a four day time out was much needed. Besides, how beautiful is this? This was taken on a barge stuffed with books to the brim - which I loved. I just wish I had had more energy - which was an issue due to the sun! Dreaming of finding a speakeasy…
