“Are you taking the ****?”
It started out as an ask over a grubby, greasy burger, in an accessible diner that smelt to kingdom come of vinegar. Dirty fries to hand of course. Hardly the ‘sight’ of fashionable glamour.
Eating my feelings, I was at a low ebb professionally - and not to mention incredulous at the conversation, hence the blunt outburst. Victoria Jenkins, the CEO of Unhidden, the (in)famous adaptive fashion label had just asked me (!) to model in her runway show. But isn’t this the stomping ground of… well ‘nothing tastes as good as skinny feels’? (Looking at you, Kate Moss.) Can I interest you in a pithy one liner and drink instead? I’m no Tyra Banks!
It was February 2023. I remember Victoria’s sly smile as she watched it hit me; no, this was a genuine offer of work, for Kurt Gieger and Unhidden respectively.
Unfiltered shock aside, it’s London Fashion Week - and for paywall subscribers, I thought I share a little bit of what happened behind the scenes from London Fashion Week for the day.
Being disabled doesn’t mean a lack of interest in fashion or beauty; vanity is humanity after all.
